The requirements of the competition called for the restoration of an abandoned warehouse into the “Mango Vinyl Hub Headquarters”, a mixed-use cultural space dedicated to the production of disc vinyl, with additional exposition space, store and office space for the new headquarters.
Our proposal doesn’t take the existing warehouse as a tabula rasa to create a new structure from scratch, nor does it seek to merely preserve the building without introducing new elements. Rather, it functions as a subtle balance between both, where some parts are preserved, others are added and others demolished to produce new atmospheres.
By eliminating the first floor, the warehouse acts as a landscape for the project to evolve. Hanging objects occupy the space while their enclosure merges and creates a light covering on top of the existing structure, allowing for an additional level while keeping the facades intact. The proposed program grows autonomously by creating a new way of dealing with existing structures, as the old does not merge with the new, but neither denies it.
